Chapter 19

As soon as Cheryl showed up, she took control of everything, from checking invites at the door to demanding miniscule adjustments to the streamers. Reed did his best to delay the inevitable, going so far as to fib about the time the guests were arriving, but he swore the woman had a tracking device on his vehicle. It was the only way to explain how she pulled up seconds behind him in her rented Lincoln Town Car. She was running Danielle ragged, leaving her no time to socialize. They didn’t even have a chance to exchange hellos, but Reed figured it was for the best. As much as he longed to take his girlfriend into his arms, he was trying to give her space.

No, that’s a lie.

The truth was, he was giving himself space, retreating to a corner to lick his wounds like an injured animal. He felt rejected and like any self-respecting male, he instinctually backed off. Yet, he couldn’t manage to stay away from her entirely. He spent every night imagining Danielle throwing herself into his arms and telling him she loved him. When she didn’t, he’d retreat once again into his townhouse where he burrowed under the covers until a new day forced him to repeat the cycle. It wasn’t his intention to punish her, even if it came off that way. It was self-preservation. Artists were notoriously sensitive, and his already damaged ego couldn’t handle another blow.

“Are there any special songs you want us to sing?” Gavin asked Isabelle as he adjusted his neckerchief. “We have quite the repertoire between us. Classic rock, show tunes, country, hip-hop, blues – we’ve got all the bases covered.”

Isabelle was so excited Reed worried she’d have trouble catching her breath. “We should have a good mix of everything so all the kids hear music they like,” she finally decided. “But we definitely need something we can dance to. Even though some of us can’t dance ourselves, we have fun watching everyone else make fools of themselves.”

“So, we need a few line dances.” Ben winked. “Gotcha. That shouldn’t be a problem.”

With his two costars hogging the spotlight, Reed was old news. Isabelle was busy chatting with them while Danielle manned the entrance with Donna, welcoming the guests and collecting donations for the foundation. Even Cheryl was occupied with guiding the camera crew to the optimum locations. Reed got lost in the mix, but he didn’t mind being temporarily forgotten, especially when Goldie tapped him on the shoulder.

“Boy, I barely had a chance to say hello to you at the airport,” she declared, wrapping him in a giant bear hug. “I can’t believe it’s been two years since the last time we got together. Tell me what you’ve been up to.”

Reed returned the embrace, never happier to see a friendly face. Of all his former castmates, he was closest with Goldie. When he joined the show in the second season, she was the first to welcome him. Plus, their characters dated on three separate seasons, which meant they shared a lot of screen time.
